TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY WHILE TRAVELING

It’s that time of year again! The holiday season is quickly approaching and you may be preparing for holiday travel. Whether it be to reconnect with family and friends or to take a much-needed vacation, we all deserve a break.

But travel can take a toll on your health if you’re not careful. We have compiled several tips to get the most out of your travel plans while keeping up with your physical and mental health.

After all, taking a ‘vacation’ from your vacation to get back in shape is rarely an option.

Stay hydrated. Carry a bottle of water with you at all times. This is especially important if your destination has warm weather. Your body can quickly fatigue when your day’s full of sun and sweat with no "agua". Drink, baby, drink! Drinking plenty of fluids can also help ward off excess snacking and help you to feel fuller. It’s good for your skin, too. Bonus!

Sleep, sleep, sleep. Travel can be harsh on your body. Between lugging around bags to and from your destination, sightseeing and walking all day, and being out of your typical routine, you will need some time to recharge. Listen to your body and take that rest when needed. Your mind, body and spirit will thank you.

Start with a healthy breakfast. Avoid heavy, calorie-dense breakfasts and avoid skipping breakfast altogether as well. Eating a healthy breakfast in the morning will give you the energy you need to propel yourself through the day.

Beware of the holiday cheer. Many hotels offer complimentary snacks or treats during the holidays. And if you’re not staying at a hotel, you can replace that with grandma or Aunt Doris – you know she’ll be serving high-calorie holiday foods. Don’t say no entirely but do eat in moderation. Save the bulk of your calories for the big meals with your loved ones and avoid the snacking urges if possible (and yes, it is possible).

Know your essentials. So many things are out of your control or different than what you’re used to when you travel. Go into the trip knowing the top three things you need in order to feel good – and be sure you meet those three needs. If you have a plan, you’re more likely to stick to it. Maybe it’s good sleep? Opportunities for movement? Time for relaxation? Time to yourself? Whatever it is, be sure to build time in your day to meet your needs.

And last but not least:

Give yourself grace. Don’t obsess over everything being picture perfect. Expect things to go a little off track (and learn to be okay with that). Enjoy your time with friends and family and recharge your psyche. Take advantage of what there is to do and see and relax a little. Because hey, you deserve it.
